Why Every Musician Should Practice Meditation

There are a number of reasons why every musician should practice meditation.

Meditation is like strength training for the mind.

It’s a simple yet powerful method that helps us to perform at our very best. With meditation we train our mind like we train our body with physical exercise.

Don’t take it just from me, some of the most successful musicians of all time are known to practice meditation like Madonna, Katy Perry, Kendrick Lamar, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Lenny Kravitz, Rick Rubin and the list goes on and on.

Here’s a short video explaining what meditation really is.

Now, let’s get into why every musician should practice meditation.

1. Focus Better

Do you remember a moment when you started creating an amazing song and completely zoned out? You may have been in the zone for hours without even realizing it. This is called deep focus.

When we want to be as productive as possible, we need to focus 100% of our mind into it. We have to get into that magical zone of deep focus where time just flies by. At that moment, nothing in the world matters except the one thing we’re doing.

With meditation we’re able to get into the zone easier. We’re able to focus our mind more deeply.

2. Be More Creative

By being able to focus better and more deeply, it’s inevitable to be more creative, as well.

When we get into the zone of deep focus, our mind won’t be in the way of creativity. We focus the resources of our mind fully into the process of creation. If you’re stressed out and your attention is constantly bouncing from one place to another, you cannot be as creative as possible.

3. Stress Less

Stress is the nemesis for us musicians. It may destroy our ability to be creative.

Often we stress because we have unsolved thoughts floating around in our head. The mind is constantly bringing the thoughts into the surface to make us solve them.

By meditating we learn to be at ease with the mind. We acknowledge each thought and that way we worry less because we understand the mind better.

It’s scientifically proven that meditation helps to reduce stress, anxiety and even to treat depression.

4. Have A Clearer Vision

If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll never get there.

Life of a musician is fun but not easy. We are constantly creating because we love the craft. But, it’s very easy to get lost in the fun of creating and not think about where we want to go. We might not have a long-term vision at all.

By meditating we get to know our mind better. We acknowledge the thoughts in our head and learn to pay more attention to our aspirations, dreams and goals.

How To Get Started With Meditation

The great thing about meditation is that anyone can do it anywhere at anytime. All you need is a comfortable place and 10 minutes. That’s it.

Ready to give it a shot?

I highly recommend getting started with guided meditation that helps guide the mind during the process. HeadSpace is a very popular guided meditation app that really works. It has 10 free meditation sessions and you can pay a monthly subscription fee for even more. It’s not necessary to pay at all either. You can just go over and over the 10 free sessions.

You can also look up Guided Meditation on YouTube and you’ll find tons of great content.

When you feel you’re starting to get the hang of the mind, you can just put on some relaxing ambient music and meditate on your own.

If you’re thinking about should you make music your full-time job, meditation should be part of your daily routine.

Are you going to try meditation? Let me know 🙂
